Visit this site http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ and follow the instructions. On page 2, be sure to select contrib and plf servers. When you get to page 3, copy the results.

Launch your favorite terminal, e.g. konsole or xterm

$ gedit seturpmi

Paste the results from page 3 and save.

$ chmod 744 seturpmi

$ su

# ./seturpmi

Sit back and let script run and set up the /etc/urpmi/urpmi.conf. When its done, you can then use the urpmi command to get packages you want. Can also use rpmdrake and browse the list of packages if your not sure of package name.

Hope this helps.

vlc is a good video player but i'd point you to mplayer with the win32-codecs (this pkg is really goodand you can download from plg repo) to see almost videos without problem vlc has lot of problems lots codecs that's in it.

Try setting up different source repositories. I often had problems with US sources then changed it UK. My thought was perhaps the US sources were to busy and were reaching connection limits. But that was just a guess on my part.
After changing to UK sources, haven't had an issues other then decrease in transfer speed.
