Viewing the windows partition

Hi,

I'm a relative newbie to linux. I currently have Mandriva 10.1 installed on my computer on one partition, with windows xp on the other. I'd like access to certain files on my xp partition, but I don't know how to make that work under mandriva. As I am a newbie, step by step instructions as how to mount the windows partition would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
vital_101

You should mount your Windows partition; i.e.

mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/C

You should know that hda is your first hard disk (primary) and hdb is you secondary one;

and hda1 is the first partition of the primary hard disk; the second partition is hda5, and then hda5, ...

I suggest you to see a "fstab" example fromInternet to see the options and ...

also see "man mount"

Note that if your windows xp partition is an NTFS partition you will need to specify that with the -t option given to the mount command.

ie.
Code:
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/C -t ntfs

I'm wondering why do you need tomount the partition manually. When I tried to install Mandrake 10.1 for my first time, the installer found my XP partitions by itself boththe NTFSand the FAT32.
At the end of the installation process I found them mapped as /mnt/win_c and win_d.

strange. When I installed all my Mandrake and Mandriva version, it automounted them all under /mnt/windows. No need to edit my /etc/fstab file or anything.

you can also check out the KWIKDISK feature in KDE (it's autoloaded on the lower right corner of your taskbar). It shows all your unmounted and mount drives. Your Windows partition should be in there. If it's still not in there, go into the mandriva control center and there's a partition tool in there. It can also mount drives.

For me it automatically set my windows partitions to mount too. Anyway if you don't like editing /etc/fstab just go into the Mandrake Control Centre->Mount Points->Partitions
