Video card for mdk10.1?
I will be upgrading/replacing most of my hardware soon that will run under Mandrake 10.1. The hcl says that the NVIDIA GFORCE FX5700 is compatible with 10.1. I am looking at the MSI FX5700LE-TD128 which uses the same chip. Does anyone know what grief I will have when I attempt to install Mandrake on my new system? The other relevant piece is: ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe motherboard.
Thanks. |
any nvidia card will work just fine, with the same third party driver from nvidia.com please search this site for information on installing this driver, as it is not able to be included as a core part of the linux distributions. there is a simpler open source nv driver that will work too, which is standard on all distro's, but will not provide 3d acceleration etc...

Thanks for the quick reply.
My main concern was: Will the Mandrake install boot to X Windows? From your reply I assume it will boot to X (although an un-excelerated X.) From there I can do a custom kernel or install the NVidia driver myself to get the full benefit of the card. Correct? |
10.1 Official will install the proper accelerated drivers (via RPM's) automatically for you.
Trying to go back and install the drivers on the nvidia site, actually causes more problems for newbies, than it's worth. At worst you can download the proper RPM's via the repositories: http://www.zebulon.org.uk/urpmi_en.html Then urpmi nvidia-kernel nvidia kernel-source |
Thanks for the re-assurance. I will give the MSI card a try.

I believe the only Official versions that have these RPMs are the ones you pay for e.g. Discovery, Powerpack etc. The official Download edition doesn't have them, or at least never used to (the last one i got was 9.2). The only other way i thought you could get them was by joining mandrakeclub. If I am wrong I apologise in advance but I am fairly sure this is accurate.

Download sites for the drivers have been already posted on these forums...
