Very odd behaviour dialing ISP

Hi

Computer: IBM ThinkCentre (P4, 3GHz, 1GB RAM), AT external modem, Display = IBM 865G, Monitor = Phillips 170B flat, HD = Maxtor 6Y080L0 80 GB, Mouse = USB, Sound = C-Media Electronics CMI8738/C3DX card, currently multi-booting SUSE 9.1,
Mandriva LE2005 and FreeBSD 5.3

When dialing out, in Mandriva LE2005 (newly reinstalled), using..
(a) KPPP from the menu - I get rows of boxes, very slow dial out, finally no connection.
(b) (Left click the) Network Monitoring screen | Connect Modem -I get immediate dialing but after exactly 19 seconds, typcially, a failure to connect. Periodically however, I get a connection.
(c) (RIght click the) Network Monitoring icon in the system tray | Connection ppp0 - I get a connection about half the time and the other times no connection.

Very green. Can anybody help me please?

Philip (phidor).

what do your syslogs say about this?

phidor 05-26-2005 05:29 AM

Thanks for answering Simon. After dialing - unsuccessfully - using method (c) I obtained from /var/log/syslog...

Serial connection established
using channel 1
using interface ppp0
Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem
sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0x9fb92cc1> <pcomp> <accomp>]
last message repeated 9 times
LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Conection terminated.
Hangup (SIGHUP)
Exit.

While I was finding the log a connection was established on "channel 2"...

Serial connection established.
using channel 2
Using interface ppp0
Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem
sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0x68bffd2a> <pcomp> <accomp>]
...

Thank you for your help.

Philip (phidor).

/dev/modem should be a symbolic link pointing to your modem special device.

You could also try using a simple com-terminal, like minicom or such, and see if the modem responds.

In a pinch, you can try echoing a string of numbers to your modem device like this:

# echo "atdt5552224" > /dev/modem

and see if you can hear it dial. If this works, then your problem lies with some sort of dialout script. If it dosn't then your modem is not /dev/modem. (I don't know if laptop modems have speakers ...?)

Thanks Simon. I worked with your suggestions but got nowhere. In the end I disconnected my Dynalink Modem, and as a last restort borrowed a CNet modem from a friend and gave it a try to find everything runs beautifully. However, it is really thanks to your encouragement to try different ideas that I persisted so I really apprreciate your help Simon! Cheers, Philip (phidor).

Cool - are either of these modems in the HCL? If not, then please stick your experiences in there. Thanx.

Looking at your profile: hey, a kiwi! I could almost drive to your place... Would you (please) stick your distro in your profile as well? It will help in future.

Entry in HCL and can now enter a preferred distro in profile. Thanks for the support Simon. Philip(phidor).
