version #10.1 CE - how to locate a device ??
I've just installed the 10.1 community that's on the front cover of this months (well Dec 2004 - LXF60) linux format.
Initially, I just did the upgrade of 10 official, but the upgrading sent my system to a sack of shit (nothing new there with mandrake upgrading!), so I just did a normal install, and it seems to have gone in fine (again nothing new etc etc).
Now eons ago I learned how to get my CDRW playing music cd's by changing the device from the default /dev/cdrom to /dev/scd0 (the scsi emulation and all that), I found that cure, purely by chance.
It's usually worked OK, but with this 10.1 I can't get any sound out of the CDRW, I've tried changing the device name (/dev/hdc, /dev/sg0, etc etc) none of which work.
So how would I find out what the system calls the device and what else would I need to check to find out why it won't make any sound?
regards
John
p.s. and yes my sound card does seem to be working OK, I got the system startup jingle fine, so there's no problem with the driver.
