/var/log/messages Permitions always on read

Hi,

I need to fix a permition in the /var/log/messages file.

By default it is not readable for "others".

I need it to be readable by others in order that a program can read it freely.

The problem is, after a while it mysteriously switches back to the default setting.

How can I make that change permanent?

I've found the prog that mysteriously changes my /var/log/messages permitions: through a cron string msec changes the file's permition from 644 to 640:

sab feb 18 20:01:01 2006 [carroarmato0 msec] changed mode of /var/log/messages from 644 to 640

How can I convince msec not to change that file?

Ok, I've partially solved the problem by adding my account to the "adm" group owned by root.

It's a bit barbarian but hell, it works!

You could also use the drakperm program to add an exemption for the files you need readable. It's for setting permisions via msec and lets you add settings for files that aren't normally included by msec, or for setting exemptions so that msec will always change them to what you desire.

e.g. the file /etc/motd could be owned by the user root and the group nafan and the permissions set as rw-rw-r-- so that only root and anyone in the group nafan can read and edit it, but anyone else can only read the file.

I didn't notice the presence of drakperm on my system.
Now I can use the default permitions again!

Thanks!
