Using ALSA
I've searched for similar probs to mine among the threads, and the closest was the one about ALSA not being able to detect a PCI or PnP device. But that didn't help because from what I read at the ALSA site, it asked to check for the soundcore module and if it was listed, then I don't need to recompile the kernel (thk gd).
Now, if anyone has read the first posting I've made, I stated that I've only been using MandrakeLinux for about, well, a little over 2 weeks. I switched from 9.0 to 9.2, and still have the same sound probs as before, w/ the Aureal 8830.
I tried the suggestion of using "alsaconf" and realized that it wasn't installed. So I installed it using the Mandrake Control Center, and didn't take note of what version it was. Needless to say, I don't understand how to use it. After it was installed, I ran "alsaconf" again, and it didn't detect the soundcard, as stated before. I then ran "modinfo soundcore" to see if the module was there for soundcore, and it is....Will this save me from recompiling?
Anyways, how do you use ALSA?? Should I just go to the main site and download again (after removing previous one) and follow instructions from there? Does the driver for my soundcard come w/ the ALSA download from the site? (Yes, I did look under Aureal 8830, and it gives instructions for installing ALSA, which I already have.)
Any help for this nOOb would be GREATLY appreciated...
I absolutely REFUSE to go back to windoze!!

As root
Code:
modprobe snd-au8830
If nothing happens that means the module is loaded and try alsaconf again,if there
is a error you will need to get it for sound to work.Read this;
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc...&module=au8830

Following instructions on that page, after typing in the "./configure ...... ", the last line says "Unsupported soundcard au8830".
What else can I do, short of getting another soundcard - and that just isn't possible right now.

Its in the new kernels,Its in mine,so I guess your options are to compile a new kernel,or if it is a new install
I would just install a new version.Boot up a live cd like knoppix or mepis and see if your sound works, urpmi might have
a newer kernel for 9.2 I don't know mandrake that well.Looks like your sound card is supported now.

aargh!!
Ok. Another program I was trying to install says that I'm missing the kernel-source. Upon retrieving this, in always comes w/ a bad signature; Even after I remove it and try to install it again. I'm using the Mandrake Control Center, which has a feature that searches for files...there's two that I've tried, and both have had bad sigs. I even did a "urpmi kernel-headers" from the console, which just conflicted w/ other stuff, so I didn't install it.
I've read the Kernel-HOWTO, w/ the first version of Mandrake I had, 9.0, and tried out there instructions. Some of it worked, some of it didn't, which ya know, just made things worse when I went to reboot. lol
Is there more direct, or a more "laymen's" kind of HOWTO that I can use to figure out this kernel compiling/building stuff?
As an off topic question...Can anyone think back to when they first started using Linux and tell me how long it took THEM to build their kernel? Maybe if I have an idea of what and where to start, when it comes to the kernel, then I can begin to grasp some of this in a shorter time. I had hopes of being able to recompile the kernel w/in a month, considering all the reading I've done, but I'm going into my 3rd week and haven't gotten very far!!
Thx a mil, comprookie, for trying to help.

We need the kernel-source that you are using to install the driver for your sound card.Post uname -a then we can try and track it down,it will be easier to do that than compile a new kernel.Have you set up Easy Urpmi, try that and see if you can get the kernel that way or a new one.Here is the link;

lol - that was funny. I knew that page looked familiar.
I was actually referred to that page, the easy urpmi, from some reading I was doing in the ldrp (linux doc research proj). But that was w/ 9.0.
So, now that that's all set up, and I've got the kernel-source, are there any options I should use when I install it? Or should I just do the standard "rpm -i"?
Yeah..lol...sound would be nice!! Hopefully, I'll get there soon.
Once again...thnx so much!

Just install the kernal source rpm and it should put it in the right place then do what alsa says and take your time, don't be in a rush, type it just like they say.Don't forget to be root.Let us know how it goes.

Good Job,you stuck with it.Next track down the MPEG Layer 1/2/3 Player Plugin for xmms amd if you don't have it the MikMod player Plugin
then you can listen to some mp3 and radio streams.

I'm at the XMMS website now; Seems as tho there are alot of plugin you can install. Hmmm.
Okay...A couple of questions. If these sound utterly ridiculous, please just mentally slap me and reply after you got that over w/.
In the instructions for installing alsa, after everything is compiled, make, and make install, it says to insert modules into kernel. Isn't that what "make install" does? Or am I gonna lose all this stuff if I reboot?
Next....My cdrom won't read, or play (of course), my burned cd. Why?
Last...Is XMMS preferred? Or can I just stick w/ a program called Totem which came w/ Mandrake? It pretty much looks like the Windows Media Player, and plays my mpg3's when I copy them off the zip. But like I said, I can't get anything to read the burned cd.
Oh, one more thing. What is the most used P2P networking program? From what I saw on sourceforge, it looked like the gtk+ gnutella.
Even ONE question answered will be sincerely appreciated. Sound is all secondary, and my primary 'quest', is to figure out HOW the OS works and what I can do to "tweak" it. Coming from a windoze world, this isn't easy; But I persevere so that one day I will be able to help someone in need just as I have been helped. (and doing the things I REALLY wanna do, lol)

Did you do this after make install:
Code:
modprobe snd-au8830;modprobe snd-pcm-oss;modprobe snd-mixer-oss;modprobe snd-seq-oss
Did you run alsaconf?Check /etc/modules.conf Do you see this
Code:
# ALSA portion
alias char-major-116 snd
alias snd-card-0 snd-au8830
# module options should go here
# OSS/Free portion
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
# card #1
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
Next run to save the settings, then it wouldn't hurt
You should have a cd player with mandrake, you need a cable from your cd player to your sound card,
most new systems do.Never used totem, use xmms or beep-media-player or mplayer
When you want to install, find out the name and use urpmi, don't try to install from sorce"./configure make make install"
because you will catch hell triying to install all the dependences, you will see what I mean later,The sound cart driver you had no choice.
From what I hear most use gnutella.
Here is some rpm's for Mandrake 9.2
Just search on google for any you need or want but try urpmi first, later

I did the modprobe's that were listed after I had installed everything. Nothing's missing.
I ran alsaconf just to unmute the sound. I haven't checked in /etc/module.conf yet, but I will.
Thx for the heads up about installing from urpmi rather than from source. I almost started to do a few more installations...lol.
~grateful~
