USB Problems Mandrake 10.1

Hi all

Have been using Mandrake 10.1 for about 5-6 months now...have a decent handle on what I am doing

This is my first request to the linux gods...basically everything was working fine but now for some reason my USB devices are no longer recognized - have searched for this to no avail.

They were working perfectly fine...as I have installed all the updates but all of a sudden, when I connect my camera, scanner, printer whatever there is no response...

I dont know what happened all of a sudden...

You need to make sure you have a package called dynamic installed. And then go to your mandrake config control panel and make sure that hotplug is running at boot time so it works. Hotplug allows for the hotplugging of stuff like usb devices, and dynamic allows them to mount automatically.

i just checked thru mandrake's software management that dynamic-0.21-1.1.101mdk IS installed....however I can't figure out how to check if hotplug is set to load on boot up - how do I do that?

*and when I say a decent handle - i mean I am a noob who can follow directions very well *

That is in Mandriva Control Center, under "system", and enable/disable system services

You can do what Lakota said, or in a terminal as a root type in drakxservices and then make sure that hotplug is checked for bootup start. Then exit and type in init 1, and then when all is done type in init 5 and hotplug should start up.

Alright I have tested my settings and they work. I installed LE 2005 from a 10.1 Mini-Install CD. I only had to urpmi dynamic. And after connecting my iPOD Mini it showed up, BUT only after I mounted the device from /mnt/ directory. Check yours and see if its listed there.

You can always then click on harddrake to see what devices are connected to your computer, and then if your device does mount manually then just edit the fstab to make mount automatically. The noauto option might be in your fstab.

The way I did it before was to plug the device in and then as a root i would run /etc/init.d/hotplug restart and then see what shows up in the harddrake. Sometimes with this mp3 player i got free i would have to do a bit of work in the fstab to get things going, now with my ipod all that i can't do is eject it propertly, i have to restart hotplug to make that happen.

the reason i hadn't replied in so long is b/c well i spent the entire day and "simply" reinstalled my system

considering I notoriously back up everything - it wasn't such a bad experience

everything works now....lets hope i dont have to do this again - this is my second reinstall of mandrake already (w/in 5-6 months)....first time though was my own newb-ness

well anyways thanx for the help guys
