USB problem, Mandrake 10.1

I've been playing around with Mandrake 10.1 recently. I am having trouble with getting my digital camera to work properly - this was not a problem with Mandrake 9.2.

gphoto2, libgphoto2, gtkam and digikam are all installed.

When using gtKam or digikam, the application hangs. I presume therefore that the problem is "below" these two applications. Looking in the gphoto2 manual, I notice that I am supposed to have the following two files:
/proc/bus/usb/devices and
/proc/bus/usb/drivers
However the drivers file is absent. Does this mean there is a problem with the USB setup on my machine?

I've been using the 2.6.8 kernel that came with the distro, and upgraded to 2.6.10. Also I've used a 2.6.8 Win4Lin enabled kernel. All seem to have this problem.

Can anyone recommend a source of information on how to sort this (ot offer advice!).

Robert

Make sure you have the USB subsystem on autostart: you should have "USB=yes" in /etc/sysconfig/usb
Do a 'service usb start' as root and 'lsmod | grep hci'. The latter should show "uhci-hcd", "ohci-hcd" or "ehci-hdc".
Do a 'lspci | grep -i usb' and you should see some info about your USB controller, like which of the
*-hcd you to use.

I do have "USB=yes in /etc/sysconfig/usb

[root@localhost robert]# service usb start
Initializing USB controller (ohci-hcd): [ OK ]
[root@localhost robert]# lsmod | grep hci
ehci_hcd 24960 0
ohci_hcd 17920 0
usbcore 95316 4 ehci_hcd,ohci_hcd
[root@localhost robert]#

[root@localhost robert]# lspci | grep -i usb
bash: lspci: command not found
[root@localhost robert]#

What next?

After trying Suse 9.2 and Mandrake 10.1, and in both cases utterly failing to persuade the Linux box to communicate properly with my camera, I've tried out Ubunto 5.04 preview. Camera works, and the package management seems excellent (first time I've tried apt).
