usb mouse won't work

Anyone know why an optical usb mouse won't work on a laptop except the touch pad mouse? Any help will be useful.

check to make sure the modules for your usb controller are loaded (eg uhci-hcd, ohci-hcd or ehci-hcd) along with the usbmouse module
