USB Mouse, Control Centre Problems

I have not yet been able to find an anser to this topic, although it has been covered in parts, none of the issues seem to address my specific problem.

This also does not specifically apply to mandrake 10 (althought that's what i am using now) as i had the same issue in 9.0, 9.1 and 9.2 (the only reason i upgraded to each incrimental version was because of this issue!).

So here it is:

Upon installation the mouse locked up and nothing continued - no biggy, unplug the mouse, run through the install with a keyboard (as usual)

After i logged into KDE it was time to set up my internet connection, the mouse works up untill i choose to change something (it starts to detect any settings) in which the mouse and the mandrake control centre will lock up, if i remove the mouse, it remains locked up, but if i then put the mouse back in (to the same usb port or a different one) the control centre will resume, but the mouse will not.

My mouse is an optical one, usb with a wheel (Wheel Mouse Optical - Microsoft) i know it could perhaps be the penguin taking one look at my mouse and deciding it's pure evil, but the fact remains - they are the mice i use, because i like them!

Has anyone encountered the same issue? Or better yet, does anyone know how to resolve it, without of course, putting a PS/2 adapter on and plugging in into the PS/2 hole - which is not a real solution!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

If it also helps - the only part of my system that remains the same from each different version of mandrake is my mouse and cdrw.
I also think that this issue could somehow be linked to eth0 not starting up at boot time, as i have always had that same issue aswell..... but i can get online.

I had a similar problem where my usb mouse wouldn't work during the install, but when entering KDE, the mouse would work for approx. 10-15 seconds, then stop working again. Same thing with the Control Centre, it would give me the Control Centre startup screen then just hang there.

The way I resolved this was to get into the Control Centre, and in the bootloader config, choose "Force noapci". It appears that Mandrake 10's apci has issues with some motherbards and their usb controller.

Hope this helps.

hey foursticks, thanks for the reply, i tried what you suggested, but it didn't make a difference, so for the time being i have just plugged my mouse into ps/2.... while i try and figure out why dhcpd can't start!!!
