USB HD configuration

I am running a MDK 10.0 distribution and I am quite happy with it. :D
One of the most annoying things I have to deal with is how mandrake organizes my usb storage disks.
I have a fireware hd a usb hd and a usb pendrive.
I can't find a way to associate a name to every device permanently. When I plug one in removableN directory appears in /mnt/ and the device is associated with it. If I unmount and unplug it the directory (normally but not always) disappears. When I plug it back in it normally appears with an other name. If I let mandrake do all the work I never know for certain the name my drive will have.
I have tried to write the fstab file my self. I works once and then the hostN changes and the drive is associated with an other name.
The strange thing is performance, when mandrake writes the fstab and creates the directory in mnt my HD will read an write at 2MB/sec but when the same disk is associated tough the line I wrote in fstab it gets to 18MB/sec .... this is quite a hell of a difference.

Can someone help me ????
