urpmi
Is it ok to update URPMI? I tried typing urpmi urpmi, and it started updating, I didn't continue because I didn't know how safe it was. And would updating it change what updates you get? The ones I get aren't up to date.

No need to update urpmi, as far as I know.
What do you mean by updates not being up-to-date? The update packages often do lag a bit behind the cutting edge for various reasons (not urgent, no-one is packaging it, etc).

Yes it's OK to update urpmi.
The command is:
urpmi.update -a
as root.
This command will update all (-a) the presently configured urpmi sources. As defined in the Media Manager section of the Software Management section in the "Control Panel." (Configure Your Computer)
This can also be invoked from the command line with "drakconf".
"man urpmi" at the command line for the urpmi manual.
Here's a great site to help you with remote urpmi sources.

Make sure you select the right version of Mandrake in step one.

Whenever I am doing any upgrades to my system, I first update urpmi, once thats done, I just select automatic updates. The whole process is done as follows,
#urpmi urpmi
then
#urpmi --auto-select
all installed packages will be updated.

Up until the 10.1 fixes, it *was* advisable to occasionally run "urpmi urpmi", to get the latest version of urpmi. I think that now, when you do a urpmi --auto-select", if there are changes to urpmi, it installs them as well.
(I could be misinformed on that. In any case, it won't *hurt* to run "urpmi urpmi". )
And to update your *sources* run the "urpmi.update -a" command like sal said above.
