Upgrading to Mozilla 1.6 in Man 9.2

I am running Mandrake 9.2 on an IBM thinkpad P3 processor with 512 mb of Ram.
Whenever i run the Mozilla update i get the new version of Mozilla but as soon as i reboot my laptop i lose the update and it reverts back to mozilla 1.4. I know this is technically a mozilla problem, but i wanted to know if anyone else is experiencing this problem too, and if you are what solution you found.

IIRC, I believe you are suppose to remove/un-install any previous versions of mozilla when you upgrade a version. And also delete your ~/.mozilla directory.

I have a question also, i renamed my /usr/local/mozilla to /old.mozilla and then installed Mozilla 1.6. The new mozilla starts fine and everything, this is what the question is, but it also saved my bookmarks, settings, and plugins somehow. Can someone explain how this happens? I thought i would have to copy over the plugins from the 'old.mozilla' to the new 'mozilla' folder, and re-enter bookmarks. Now I am afraid to delete the 'old.mozilla' folder until I fully understand what's going on.

I also had a problem with 1.5 when downloading files. I would start the download and it would go fine for a while but then randomly it would jump to 100% downloaded and finish the download. I would goto the location where i saved the file and it wouldnt even be close to finished, even though the download manager said it was 100%. Just wondered if anyone else encountered this problem. Upgraded to Mozilla 1.6 and have started downloading an 'iso' file, hopefully the problem is fixed now...

Thanks for help

Mozilla 1.6
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.6) Gecko/20040113

Heh, guess i still need to work on this. I should have backed them up. Oh well.
I allread lost them once when i installed mandrake.

You can install Mozilla in /usr/local/mozilla

Most distributions install Mozilla in /usr, so the mozilla program is found at /usr/bin/mozilla. Therefore, you can install multiple copies and put the root of the program in different locations, for instance, /usr for the distribution copy, /usr/local for the download copy, or even /home/username for your own personal copy.

I was just giving a general asspumtion according to the instructions on mozilla's site.

"Before installing a new version of Mozilla, you should uninstall your previous version first. If you have a third-party extension installed, particularly the spell checker, you should also completely delete your Mozilla install directory before making a new install. Do not install over an old Mozilla version."

"Upgrading from an eariler version of Mozilla or netscape 6 or 7: to avoid incompatibility problem with previous versions, the Mozilla installer will prompt you to delete the install directory if it is not empty. Answer NO if you put your profile or other personal files in the install directory, otherwise the files will be deleted. Users who put profiles in the default location are not affected."

I mess with multiple versions of not only Mozilla, but other browsers as well, and the idea of installing them in different directories, such as /usr, /usr/local, /contrib, /opt, or youir home directory, makes it possible to have four or five copies around, if you really want to get carried away. Two, sometimes three, copies, work nicely for me. I can experiment, then I can go back to the stable stuff that works.

Inside your /home/youusername directory if you view hiden folders in konq you'll see your personal config files and some others in there. One should be for your browser and inside that one you'll find all your weblinks and other browser settings.

The reason your new mozilla used the old mozillas bookmarks is because during installation it founr this file and didn't over write it but instead used it. You could possibly point all your browsers to the same bookmak file and they will all use it then. Passwords might work the same way.
