Upgrading to MDK10 CE has not made my day!!

Since 'upgrading' to mandrake 10 community edition a whole host of things are now screwed.

My delete button is now a backspace (which is like pulling a muscle you didn't think you used much)
Mysql is knackered and no-one is responding to my thread asking for help so knackered it remains.
eroaster's text labes have been removed and replace with pictures of the functions which is...must stay calmmm.(not MDK10 but eroaster I know but still, it happened on the update)

I'm not a complete Linux convert mainly because I dont have the time to screw about sorting shit like this out. Windows for all its crapness (why do you think I'm here)is much much simpler to use.

A nice example is bit torrent. I discovered bit torrent a while back, read a couple of web pages, clicked a couple of links and a few painless minutes later my windows box was in business.

To get bit torrent working on 9.0 required so many updates, dependencies and fcuking about I decided to update to MDK10. I read up and most reviews reckoned it was a worthy download and bit torrent was included so that was the clincher.

I had a bad burn of CD3 so after the upgrade I downloaded it again. Incidently I wasn't able to finish the download (via ftp of course) for an unknown reason, so after 2 attempts, had to use my windows box and ftp it to my linux box which has a faster better burner. 9.0 burning worked ok.

Now I want to burn the image and I cant GRRRRRRRRRRRR

eroaster worked fine if i logged in as root in 9.0. Now I cant log in as root any more. I can on the command line but where is the option to login as root on the login interface. I have my users listed and can login as them no probs but I need to log in as root to run eraoster.

WTF!!!! why has this changed?? what was wrong with the old login? Why didnt anyone say 'its not broken so why try to fix it'??

I've tried starting eroaster from the command line as root but no joy. Errors include
(when clicking on create image) You can't create any image at this point!

or when trying to detect my reader (again after loggin in as root on the command line and starting it from there)

Couldn't detect your reader / recorder !
Please make sure that you are root or that you're allowed to read /dev/sg* !

ITS MY READER YOU KNOW THE ONE I USED TO INSTALL THE DAMMED OS!!!!!

I'm trying I really am but an update should not cause this amount of hassle.

I would love to see Widows dissapear into oblivion. But I'm sorry, as a pretty computer literate person I can not see this happening any time soon. Each one of you picture your non computer friends mother using Linux. My mum, a secretary for her whole life, struggles with windows.

So it's free right? You didnt pay for this so quit your bitchin right? We I got into linux for the ethical reasons not the financial and for is superiority as an OS. I guess I forgot to add ease of use to my initial list.

I'm not a linux guru as you have probably guessed. I'm not a windows guru either I'm just a PHP/MySql web aplication developer who wanted a little more. Unfortunatly, I thought that little more would be good stuff not a splitting headache and high blood pressure.

I can understand the frustration! Linux does *excite* the brain cells a bit more. However, you'll find that ranting doesn't usually bring people running to help :(!

As frustrating as it is remember that (SCO B******t aside) this OS is more or less free; you could completely re-write the parts that you didn't like unlike say XP; although I take your point about ease of use :)!

sy-co 04-16-2004 03:41 AM

I soo needed a rant. I've got posts about the specific problems though this was a general 'Mandrake 10 is a pain' rant. If i had known there would be this much hassle i wouldnt have upgraded. And if time is money then free it aint coz days are passing and I'm getting nowhere.

My problem with mysql is my biggest concern and I've not had a single reply. Not even a genreral pointer in the direction I need to go.

Thanks for the reply though shadow.

ShadowMan 04-16-2004 07:09 AM

No problem m8 :). I depended on loads of people when I 1st started, it's only now (2 years) that I feel able reply with at least a little help.

What's actually wrong with your Mysql setup?

sy-co 04-16-2004 10:58 PM

Thanks again, but I think im just going to reinstall mysql. I could use the practice :)

Okay, root user login isn't enabled b default in mandy 10. It's easy to enable though. As for the keyboard prob, try a different layout. See if the problem exists in a diferent desktop/window manager.
Bit torrent. I found it very easy to install, urpmi bittorrent and vwoila, works out dependancies and a few minutes later it's functional.

A final comment.
Mandy 10 community is more of a test version, maybe you should get the official version.

about your bittorrent, is it really necassary to have the fancy gui? i mean if you have some python libs installed you could just use the ncurses based downloader from a terminal... no need for wxgtk or wxwindwindows or whatever it is...

sy-co 04-17-2004 06:34 PM

Equinox, thanks for your reply but I think you have confused me with someone who understand Linux far more than I do! Still way down the learning curve.

beejayzed Thanks you too for your reply.

I'm sure it is if you know where and how. I've looked all through the MCC but guess I've missed it. Where can I enable this?

I'm using a japanese 106 keyboard (I'm in japan) and have that selected. It's the only japanese keyboard option. All the other keys wor fine. I suspect this is just an error but the MDK10 devs> I'll send an email.

I didn't but would prefere to discuss this in new thread after sorting my MySql problem.

Thanks again I've calmed down now :) but still am not having much luck trying to fix my various hassles. But then I'm the perservering type.

A final comment.

Yea I just wish one of the many reviews I read, mentioned that there might be a shedload if hassles that come with it. These things you learn I suppose.

You can enabe root user login with the KDE control centre->system->login manager->users tab->uncheck root.
Did you try your keyboard with another window manager/desktop?

As far as eroast er is concerned this is how I understand it. Mandrake 10 installs by default kernel 2.6. It no longer uses scsi emulation to get ide cdwriters to work. It works natively with ide writers. So it doesn't create the scsi devices for ide cdwriters anymore, (sg0 or scd0) but eroaster is still looking for those. But if you install k3b you won't have any problems. I used eroaster exclusively and had to move to k3b today. But it's relatively painless.

For root logon go to menu -> system -> configuration -> kde -> system -> login manager

There unclick the x hiding root user. I know what you mean. I liked having the optop to write in root rather than having it there for everyone to see (ex. hidden but accessible) like I can in debian.

ok, 10.0's failsafe manouver was to try and reinstall the missing package, which after 2-3 tries it managed to do. now for the next problem, it did something to the partition table that makes it impossible for system commander to read.....

perry 05-30-2004 08:23 AM

while i do have a backup of the mbr (and possibly the partition table), the only way i can get that partition table updated is to reinstall 10.0 all over again with a brand new partition layout....

a 2nd install has failed to make any diff to system commander....

windows 2k and mandrake (and even slackware via cfdisk) however all confirm the presence of several linux partitions laid out perfectly...

i'm reinstalling system commander with the option of not carrying over it's previous configuration...

if it fails to detect a properly laid out partition table it's the end of the road for syscmd as far as i'm concerned....
