Upgrading
 

I currently have Mandrake 10.0 and I am happy with its peformance. That said, I would like KDE 3.3 and a version of Amarok that works well.

In the past when I tried to upgrade my system with a new version of mandrake all hell broke loose on my PC. Can anyone advise me how to get what I want (see paragraph 1) and keep my system plodding along happily.

I have read that KDE 3.3 installs in your home folder so that you can install this on your 10.0.

Note that the Download version of 10.1 comes with KDE 3.2. 3.3 is on CD4 which is not for download.

I reccommend that if you upgrade to 10.1, do a full install, wipe everything except for /home. I had problems with an upgrade install, twice, before doing a full install.

Can mandrake be updated using only URPMI anyone?

Bleh....

1) Your best bet is to perform a CLEAN install whenever possible.

2) Contrary to the prior poster, the KDE RPM's are redily available via the URPMI repositories.

Once you have internet connectivity you can easily update.

Other than a few driver RPM's you would be missing nothing with the download version of Mandrake.

3) Thac's web site even has a far more current version of KDE (3.3.2) along with a newer Xorg install.

You can point your URPMI sources to it as well (again see my sig) and URPMI away to get the upgrade(s).

4) 10.1 switched over to Xorg instead of XFree, as a result, see choice 1 above.


5) Want to upgrade but retain your "home" directories and settings?

su
cd /home

tar -czvf homes.tar.gz *

Save the resulting file.

Install Mandrake 10.1

Then

su
cd /home

tar -xzvf homes.tar.gz

Done.

KDE 3.3 RPMs
 

I might have the wrong RPM sources but I see very few KDE 3.3 RPMs available for install, mostly related to KDE-pim....

Could you point me at a source which carried the KDE 3.3 RPMs?

So for upgrading i should:
1) Back up my Home directory
2) Download the CD's (1-4)
3) Burn the CD's
4) Install 10.1

is this correct?

You can't download CD4, it, only available in the packaged version. You'll have to get the RPMs later.

Definitely back up your home directory. Back up any other configuration files into which you have put a lot of work (smb.conf etc). Also back up any other files you want to keep like downloaded files if they are not in /home.

During the install format all the partitions except for /home unless you want to change its size. (youve got the backup, remember).

You will then have the enjoyable task of reinstalling firefox, video drivers etc :)

I already stated, you can get a very recent Mandrakified version from Thac's site.

Go ahead and perform an install with the 3 CD's, then upgrade AFTER you have everything set up.

I'm beginning to have second thoughts. I was hopeing it was as simple as URPMI KDE-3.3.

It's still possible! Go to the THAC website that ojpose mentioned and just get the KDE 3.3 stuff. You don't HAVE to upgrade to 10.1 to do this.

Really, will KDE3.2 be removed at the same time?

I don't know, it's some time since I looked at this. You will need to research it. Quite possibly you could end up with a choice of which to run.
