upgrade mandrake 9.2 to mandriva 2007

Hi, can I upgrade mandrake 9.2 to Mandriva 2007 free? I have the dvd od mandriva 2007 free but I keep on getting "unable to mount compressed loopback" error during installation of mandriva 2007 from the dvd so I thought maybe I can install mandrake 9.2 and then upgrade to mandriva 2007 from the dvd of Mandriva 2007. Is it possible and how to do it? Also, if anyone can suggest the solution to "unable to mount compressed loopback" error, it would be the best. I have tried burning two dvd's from different companies and with different speeds of burning but I get the same error during installation so I thought of installing mandrake 9.2. Hoping for the best...

Hi,

I don't think the idea of upgrading from 9.2 would work if you haven't been able to install from your DVDs.
I think that at boot time the basic system tries to mount a compressed filesystem image that should be on the
DVD -- to do this, it uses "cloop", a module that is like "loop" (which permits you to treat a file as though
it was a filesystem itself) but works with a compressed file instead. I guess that's where your error message is coming from: for some reason, cloop cannot manage to read basic details from the compressed filesystem.
Some things to check: did you check to see that the ISO from which you burned your DVDs was intact, by
verifying the md5sum? does the DVD that did the writing, or the one that does the reading (I don't know if you are trying to install on a different system from the one that you used to create the DVD), need some cleaning with
a lens-cleaner disk?

When I first installed Mandriva 2007 on my elderly Acer laptop I got a number of errors while various packages were being installed, but the basic system installed and I was able to obtain the ones I cared about from the web later. But when I used the very same DVD to install on a brand new desktop PC for someone else, it all worked perfectly. So my laptop problems might have be caused by some dirt on the DVD laser lens; I don't make that much use of the DVD drive there.

Hi Dr. Ross, thank you so much for explaining the details. I really appreciate it. And you were right, the problem seems to be the intactness of the ISO file. I checked the Mandriva 2007 Free ISO with md5sum.exe and the string I got was "3c0994d778a0abd5c266a1625d33f694" while the checksum I needed to have was "dca83c834ca8e94e80f2567bf4046390" (please correct me if I am wrong on the checksum I need which is "dca83c834ca8e94e80f2567bf4046390"). I a trying to fix the ISO through a torrent client uTorrent. When I ran the check on the ISO through uTorrent surprisingly only 59% was loaded so it meant I need to download the remaining 41% again. I made three DVD's thinking something was wrong with the media or the speed I was burning and I burnt the DVD's with 2x, 4x and 8x and on different media but I should have known the md5sum thing earlier and I could have been much better off. Anyways, it was nice to hear you got your distribution working on your laptop. Once again, thank you. Have a nice day.
