Upgrade Mandrake 10.2 -> Mandriva 2008.1 ??

I would like to upgrade one of my office machines from "LE 2005" (10.2)...however, the 2008.1 (Spring) DVD doesn't give me the option to upgrade - it just goes into full-on install mode. I really do not want to do a fresh install on this box. Most everything works but a few older applications are broken and need to be updated. I figure I can either create new RPMs for these (which will probably send me into dependency hell) or just upgrade the box. But the DVD doesn't give me the option. ANyone have a trick for this?

Thanks
Bob

I do not think an upgrade will work. There are simply too many changed libraries. I have never, since version 7.0, gotten a successful upgrade in Mandriva. From an initial version to a Spring release is possible, but not an entire version change, and certainly not several versions ago.

Hmmmm. I was afraid you were going to say that. I was able to upgrade a machine a short while back from 2006.0 to 2008.0 without much grief, though...! I have everything backed up so I'd still like to give it a try. The problem is, I'm not even presented with the option to upgrade (this is the first time I've seen that, and I've run Mandrake/iva distros going back to before 7.2).

I have to admit that I've been installing Ubuntu on some new machines, and I'm pretty happy with it. Upgrades are relatively painless, though sometimes they have to be done stepwise.

why not upgrade 10.2 to 2006 and then to 2008?

Every time I have tried an upgrade, I ended up with a "qwirky" system that misbehaved. I have kept files in a separate partition that is preserved from install to install, but that is not the same thing as maintaining the same system. FWIW, in a conversation I had elsewhere several years ago, other os have the same problem, including Windows. It really depends upon the libraries that have changed. My 2008 (and 2008.1) has an upgrade option, but I also ran cooker this time.
