Upgrade from Community to Official ?
 

is there a noob-friendly way to do this ?

id like to know too if anyone is willing to share that info :)

This is a Mandrake 10.0 Community to Official upgrade procedure using the desktop GUI tools.

i was fully updated on community when i tried this.
i changed my urpmi sources to official, and added the suggested mandrake-release rpm.

urpmi --auto-select
had nothing to update.

so,
it appears that a up to date community is the same as official.
i'm not exactly sure what the mandrake release rpm did, but i know it tells the system that it's now called official instead of community. this should help late as new versions sre released.

this works perfectly as far as i can see.
i would recomend updating everything first, before you "upgrade". this is how i did it, and i didn't have any of the quirks that others reported.

I did exactly as set out above and have successfully upgraded. No probleeems whatsoever. Official all the way. BTW; thank you for the advise.

Warmaster, I'm afraid that as Linux help documents go, that one is as hand-holding as they come. It does assume that you know basic things like what an ftp server is and how to get files from it.

That said, I'll admit that this is my first linux help documement, and as the writer, I'll probably be blind to confusing aspects of the layout, so if there are obvious flaws, feel free to point them out.

As far as I know, it just updates that label and changes the Software Manager's default mirror sources, although those sources seem to be broken in many cases.

I've put the upgrading after the selection of the official sources because, eventually, the version-independent Community sources will jump ahead to version 10.1.

it didn't change any sources on my box, but i urpmi from my own choices already.

the easyest way i've found to get good sources setup is to go to www.urpmi.org
and pick easyurpmi

just follow the wizard, then cut and paste output to the command line (remove old sources first)

then

$ urpmi --auto-select

for some reason i get more packes upgraded successfully this way than with the gui.

I know what a ftp is, and how to download from them.
I just don't know how to do it in the linux console.

In windows, I'm a power user.
In linux, I'm a total noob.

If you could help me update my MDK with a step by step noob-proof tutorial, I will be VERY grateful.

I used Dave Farrance's upgrade procedure and seem to have updated successfully to official.

I had difficulty with the adding "contrib" step. I pressed "add" and "ftp" and filled the fields with "contrib" as name and the ftp address in url (proxad as I am also in uk). I got following:

Unable to add medium, errors reported.

retrieval of source hdlist (or synthesis) failed
no hdlist found for medium "contrib"
problem reading synthesis file of medium "contrib"

When I tried to update the kernel from 2.6.3-4mdk to 2.6.3.9mdk-1-1mdk I got a message 2.6.3.9 was not available - the next newest was available but I have not yet upgraded. Not sure whether to proceed or be advised how to get 2.6.3.9.

I also didn't find any updates in Mandrake Update.

The kernel is at 2.6.3.13 now, and all I can say is that it works fine for me. There's never a guarantee that an updated kernel will work on a given PC.

If you've already been applying updates to the Community version, then there probably won't be. To check for security updates, you need to check the "Security updates" box, of course, but I've now made that explicit.
