Upgrade 10.1Rc1 -> 10.1Community : strange problem
Hi,
i found on a mdk ftp mirror the new tree for the 10.1 community version and i decided to give it a try. I decided to upgrade my previous installation of 10.1Rc1. Everything went fine, but i'm having a weird problem. The sympthoms is that if runlevel is set to 5 then kde in unable to start and graphics server reboot. If i set runlevel 3, login using the console and then startx, kde boots perfectly and i have my old desktop back. I've investigated a bit and the problem seems related with the environmental variable PATH. Infact if i select a failsafe session from the mdk login manager i get many error messages saying that program like grep cannot be found. This is due to te fact that isssuing "set | grep PATH" i have only "/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/games:/usr/lib/j2re1.4.2_04/bin:" . On the other hand with runlevel 3 or starting a console with crtl-alt-f1 in runlevel 5 and issuing the same command i get a different results : "/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/games:/usr/lib/j2re1.4.2_04/bin".
I think this is the problem. The question is: what is wrong and/or how do i fix it ?
thanks
Enrico

I've solved the problem: it was caused by a wrong path config in /etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc ... restoring a previous version of this file with all the correct paths everything is fine. the question is : why has this file changed ??? I've opened a bug on bugzilla and i'm waiting for an answer.

I'm not a club member (but i'm thinking about it). Mandrake doesn't advertise it at all but you can install the mandrake community via FTP with a huge repository of packages. Just browse one of mandrake ftp mirror and in the devel directory you'll find both cooker and community. Download and burn the boot iso and all you need is a fast internet connection.
bye

Just look in the mdk 10.0 official mirror list (the ones that mirror not just the ISOs but the whole tree); many of them also mirror the devel tree including cooker and community 10.1. In my case i used ftp.nluug.nl.
bye
