Updating NVidia Driver - Linux

Hi,

I recently tried to install an updated NVidia driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6629-pkg1.run). Here's what I did:

1. Opened a shell prompt
2. Logged in as "su"
3. Shut down my windows manager (service dm stop)
4. Installed the driver (sh NVidia-Linux...)
5. Ran through the rest of the wizard (Accept licence, etc)
6. Edited the XF86Config (replaced the 'Driver "nv"' line with 'Driver "nvidia"')
6. Rebooted my computer

Now when I boot up I get a shell prompt. If I edit the XF86Config back to the original settings (Driver "nv") and reboot everything works fine. Any ideas?

I am running Mandrake 10.1 Community, KDE 3.2.3, Kernel 2.6.8.1-12mdk.

Thanks.
Ryan

Hi,

That didn't work. I still get the shell prompt. I do have a line in my /etc/X11/XF86Config that reads:

Load "v41" # Video for Linux

Should I delete that? Also, how can I test to see if I can run OpenGL?

Hi,

I added the word "nvidia" to the file:

/etc/modprobe.preload

and it worked.

Now my fonts look bigger than before. I went into the "Look and Feel" section of the "Configure Your Desktop" menu option and changed them all to 8px. It still looks too bit. Any ideas on this one?

RyanThanks.

Have you tried going into 'Mandrake Control Center' under 'Hardware' and configuring your nvidia driver there? I had a heck of a time getting my nvidia driver working until I went into Control Center and ran through Video/display configuration.
