from this site:
http://www.urpmi.org/easyurpmi/
you can set up to get updates over the net. then you only have to urpmi.update -a to update your database of mdk rpms. from console you then just urpmi filename or urpmi --auto-select to update all your current packagages.

When you log into Mandrake and get the Welcome message, click on Configuration Tools and enter your root password when requested.

You will then be admitted to the Mandrakelinux Control Center where you should choose Software Management then Update. The wizard will guide you from there. I usually use the Czech ftp sites for any downloading - they have usually faster than others presumably because they are less popular. At the moment I am using the Proxad site in Paris.

Alternatively click on the Mandrake star in the bottom left corner, choose System, then Configuration, then Configure Your Computer - this is another way to get into Mandrakelinux Control Centre.

rule of thumb for urpmi.addmedia is to pick the mirror which is closest to you geographically.
I have picked a site from Ireland because I haven't had much luck with my closest mirror. You can urpmi.addmedia urpmi.removemedia to your hearts content. I have also added PLF mirror which I believe is in Turkey. Macromedia also has an urpmi mirror just for flash players and such.

I know about the rule-of-thumb but I read somewhere about using Russian or Central European mirrors because there is less traffic, and it usually works. When a new Mandrake is out the downloads from the UK, France, USA are usually very slow. Australia sometimes works better for me!
