Unable to unlock KDE 4.5 desktop icons

Following a fresh install of Mandriva 2010.1, I upgraded to KDE 4.5. After going backwards and forwards a few times, everything seems to be functioning ok EXCEPT the ability to unsort/randomly place desktop icons where I wish. When KDE starts, the icons are arranged in a locked grid (top to bottom, left to right, etc). I can change the sorting order, but I cannot remove the lock and sort them like I could before the upgrade.

I can untick everything in the relevant desktop settings menu(s) (eg: lock, sorted options, etc), but as soon as I do something like look at the properties of another icon, the repositioned icon jumps back to its locked position (even after I have ticked 'lock" to fix it in its new position.

Can someone tell me how to fix or where else I can release the desktop icon lock?

In the absence of any fixes for my problem, can anyone tell me how/where KDE4 stores the position of desktop icons?

Hi _toudi_

No, did not find an answer, except to reformat, new install, and not upgrade to KDE 4.5

I suppose I have avoided this trouble because I have set my Desktop Settings > Activity to "Desktop" (rather than folder view), then I put a folder view widget on my desktop, set to display the contents of my Desktop folder. This way I see my Desktop icons, but they are contained in a limited space (and I can add other widgets to my Desktop if I so desire).

Not sure if this helps, but it works for me here . . .

Thanks ernie. It's a comfort to know you're not alone. It would be interesting to know where the desktop icon settings are stored. Meanwhile I'll stay with KDE 4.4.3. I'm finding Mdv 2010.1 the best distro ever.

Using the standard Desktop you can add icons to the desktop, for example from the kick-off menu (right-click and select "Add to desktop"). Icons added to a standard desktop behave like other desktop widgets and can be positioned anywhere.
