unable to restore lilo even using Knoppix
Hi all,
I had MDK10 installed in my box and recently I decided to put (back) XP in the first partition in my drive (don't ask me why!!!)
XP install went fine. I had recovered lilo in previous ocassions (using 2.4.x kernel) by simply doing one of the following:
1. boot using knoppix, then issue 'chroot /dev/hde5' and then 'lilo'
2. boot using Mandrake disk1 and type 'rescue'. Then I select 'restore boot loader'
NOTE: My / is located in /dev/hde5
Unfortunately, in the case of MDK10, both attempts failed. I get a Kernel panic instead (in linux) with the following message:
resuming from /dev/hde8
Resuming from device hde8
Kernel panic: Resume Machine: Unable to find suspended-data signature ( - misspelled?
But windows boots fine via lilo.
Any suggestions would be MUCH appreciated.
Yours desparately,
Thas

Just a suggestion, but try one or both of the mdk 10 install kernels:
alt0 rescue at the boot prompt will do 2.6.3
alt1 rescue will do 2.4.25.
Another thing to try is making a boot floppy with rawrite under your expensive operating system - that should get you to your Mandrake 10, and you can configure and install lilo from there to the partition of your choice.
Good luck!
Dan

Have you told lilo/fstab of your new partition setup? Check with knoppix to make sure you have the propper entries (and that your partition setup has not changed with XP install).

You hit the point exactly, Digit0 !!
It turns out that my 'expensive o/s' decided to shuffle all my device numbers (even though I only reformated the fat32 partition that I had originally set aside for this purpose).
Due to my propensity to loose patience, I went about hosing my / partition and reinstalling MDK10. My /home drive is in tact. I'm typing this in my laptop as I watch (my desktop system's) urpmi update everything from update_sources ....
I'm doing this after I did a reinstall of MDK10... sigh!!
Next time, I'll wait a day or two for responses before I bring down the house.
Cheers,
Thas

I had this problem wtih MDK10.
booted using my install CD, F1 for more options, then 'rescue' at the prompt.
mounted my filesystems. re-installed my bootloader, went to console.
'lsparts' to see what my partitions had been renamed to.
then vi'd /mnt/etc/fstab (which was OK) and /mnt/etc/lilo.conf (which wasn't).
put the correct partition into lilo.conf (in my case hda6 instead of hda8).
/sbin/reboot to quit.
now everything works again.
