I'm running Mandrake 10 and have a D-Link DSL-504T adsl modem/router which connects via Ethernet.

I have at some stage been able to connect to the internet, however when i did i was not able to visit the vast majority of websites. I could visit a sports website like teamtalk.com but i was unable to visit Yahoo.com or Google.com or any of the big sites. In fact of every single website i tried to connect to, teamtalk.com was the only one that did work. I couldn't even get into this website.

I have tried checking the box "connect on startup" in the modem options in the Mandrake Control Centre, but everytime i go back the box is unchecked again.

I have tried clicking "connect" in the Manage Connections and it says "connecting....." along the bottom or something to that effect. Then it says its connected and promptly disconnects again straight away.

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON! I thought Ethernet connected modems liked Linux.

I'm having the same exact problem. Works fine on my home computer but doesn't work on my laptop. I can access this website but can't access google.com or other big sites. I can't log into GAIM either.

No idea what it is. Hopefully someone can help. =)

Try adding this line to /etc/modprobe.conf:

alias net-pf-10 off

kilgoretrout could you put a bit more detail into that advice because i'm quite new to Linux and i'm not entirely sure how i might try that. Or if there's a tutorial which would point me in the right direction it would help a lot.

OK. You just need to edit /etc/modprobe.conf. You need to be root to do so. Open a console and run:

$ kdesu kwrite /etc/modprobe.conf

Enter your root password when prompted and kwrite will come up with root privileges with modprobe.conf displayed. Add these lines at the end of modprobe.conf:

alias net-pf-10 off
alias ipv6 off

save the changes and reboot. This edit will disable ipv6 which is the new internet addressing protocol capable of giving an ip address for evey atom on the earth. It's being slowly adopted because we are running out of ip addresses under the old standard(ipv4) or at least that's the concern. No one is really using it as of yet on the internet and it's been known to cause problems with DNS resolution like your experiencing, especially when using the 2.6 kernels. Disabling ipv6 cures the problem. You may have something else going on but this is the first thing I'd try as it's a common problem.

It fixed my problem with not being able to access most websites. =)

But I still cannot connect to GAim or any messanger program. *shrug*

Have you tried to go to the Mandrake CC center and reconfigure your internet connection?

I have indeed had a look in the Mandrake Control Centre and i think i've had a look at just about all the settings.

Could you please be specific about which settings i need to look at in particular and how to do it?

OK there are a lots of things that I cannot see on your PC and computers are set up differently. For example, this computer I am typing on has two ethernet cards, one is integrated with the motherboard and the other is not, if you go to hardware in Mandrake CC center look to see it the card is installed and configured properly.

You can also go to Internet Connections and try to reinstall Internet Connection. You may want to contact your internet provider to see how they install their internet connection. I happen to use SBC Yahoo.

Let us know what you find out. It should be really easy to do.

You may have to install plugins for kopete and/or gaim.

Which plugins would these be? I checked the GAim site and the package install list for GAim plugins but couldn't find anything that had to do with connecting to GAim.

Go yo your mandrake control center under install packages, go to install and type in the ward Gaim and see it it pulls up any package plug-ins.

Gaim was really easy to install for me.

Also let us know what you did to get your internet to work, so someone else might be able to learn from what you did.

Yeah, I checked under there and also the website but couldn't find any plugins that have to do with connectiong to GAim.

To fix my internet problem I did what was posted in this thread:

Fixed everything for me besides connecting to GAim.
