Why is binutils on your Desktop. It does not appear you have binutils installed.
|
Yes.

You don't have a c compiler (e.g., gcc). It's highly probable that you're missing other pieces of the toolchain as well. I strongly recommend that you use your package manager as it should resolve all of these issues.
However, since you seem to want to install everything from source, you will need to install gcc. There's a problem though. You can't compile a compiler with a compiler. The only way that I could tell you how to do this would be to cross-compile. That would be difficult, at best, to do in a forum and you REALLY should use your package manager! |
but why is it happening,,,,im using mandriva 2007 free-kde,,,,and why do these guys create such probs,,,,why cant they include such basic things in the distros,,,,they are warding off people from using linux,,,,,such a mess
|
Ask them. But, if you use the package manager, you won't have these problems. They take of compiling everything for you so you don't need a toolchain. However, you can install the toolchain using the package manager if you have some reason to need it. The reality of it is that YOU'RE creating the problems because you're choosing not to use the tools that the Mandriva developers provide you...the package manager.
If you want a source-based distro try Gentoo, (C)LFS, Arch, etc. |
OK I DID SEARCHED THE PACKAGE MANAGER FOR BINUTILS and gcc BUT THERE WAS NOTHIN,,,,,I ALSO UPDATED MY SYSTEM (52 PACKAGES,152 MB)....BUT STILL THAT SAME BINUTILS ERROR,,,,,
THEN I DID -----urpmi as [root@localhost guest]# urpmi binutils unable to access hdlist file of "contrib", medium ignored no package named binutils NOW WHAT TO DO????? |
As you can see I am not a Mandriva user so I can't help you work with your package manager. I find it difficult to believe that gcc and binutils are not available. I would recommend that you do some research and learn how to use the package manager for Mandriva. Or, I would recommend that you choose a new distro that may be easier for you to work with.

i installed the same distro on my frends pc--pentium 4,32bit,intel 82845 g graphics,,,,,,and thw compiz is workin on his pc,,,,no binutils,,,,gcc errors,,,,,,
SO I DONT THINK THAT THERE CUD BE A PROB WITH THE CD,,,,,the only thing thats screwing it all is the NVIDIA,,,,,AAAH MANNNNNN!!!!! now what do guys have to say????? |
I think the first thing you need to do is calm down and take a breath. All this yelling (ie CAPS AND EXCLATION!!!!!!!!!!!) is not gonna get you much mileage on this forum. I agree with Arow that it is unlikely that binutils or gcc or any other build essential packages are not available, but looking at your original post, you are going to need to have binutils installed and in your path in order to install nvidias driver correctly and configure 3D. If this is a paid subscription version of Mandriva then I believe you can get some tech support, if not they may have an IRC channel on Freenode where you can get some specific help with your package manager and install the proper build essential packages so you can get nvidia installed correctly. I understand that some issues, particularly video issues, can be frustrating for a newcomer but there are alot of folks here at LQ that are willing to help. Be patient and understand that we are helping the best we can.

yeah agreed tux,but did u c my last post,my machine is amd and asus m2npv-vm,with nvidia 6150,,and under the control panel----3d effects,,it says ur pc doesnt suport 3d effects,,ok so i thought of upgrading the drivers.I tried both
8774 and 9742,,,but still the same errors related to binutils(unable 2 find system utility ld,pls make sure uve package binutils installed),,ok thats fine ,,no probs,,,, but when i installed the same mandriva-2007-kde on my frends pc(P-4,intel--82845G graphics),,,then there was no probs wid compiz,,,,no drivers update requied,,,it runs so smooth,,,,, i think it implies my graphics card is doin all the mess,, Otherwise the same binutils errors must've popped out on my frends pc also, isnt it so????? |
