udma won't activate in 10.1

I recently upgraded from MandrakeLinux 9.0 to 10.1 (kernel 2.4.19 to 2.6.8.1). Before upgrading /dev/hda was operating in udma2 mode. Since the upgrade I can't get it out of mdma2. Nothing else had changed.

hdparm -I /dev/hda reports *mdma2.

dmesg shows...

ALI15X3: chipset revision 32
ALI15X3: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
ide0: BM-DMA at 0x3000-0x3007, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:pio
ide1: BM-DMA at 0x3008-0x300f, BIOS settings: hdc:pio, hdd:DMA

and later...

hda: 234441648 sectors (120034 MB) w/8192KiB Cache, CHS=16383/255/63, (U)DMA

hdparm -Tt /dev/hda reports:

/dev/hda:
Timing buffer-cache reads: 196 MB in 2.02 seconds = 96.90 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 24 MB in 3.05 seconds = 7.87 MB/sec

I've tried a clean install, also with no luck.

Any hints?

Jonathan
