Typical Problem regarding net speed!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi !!!!
i m having mandy10.....I was using urmpi to get some file updates....i noticed something strange thing.....My console window is showing that it is downloading at speed of 50KB/sec...but, at the same if i use Mozilla to surfing ...the speed of downloading through urmpi drops to 5 kb/sec..even less than it......again, if i stop using Mozilla ...speed comes back to 50kb/sec....I cud not get it....HOW THIS IS HAPPENING????? One more problem....in software media manager....i have deleted the 4 CD installation options by mistake.....how can i get it back those 4 options???????????? One more problem :) What is minimum no of services i need to run faster on mandrake 10 just like windows....(no need of server, ftp,printing,)....i just wanted to use as simple mutimedia n netsurfing system??????? Thanx in advance!!! //The_neo |
look at your running services, then look up each on the web to see what itdoes. if you don't do that or need it, turn it off. probably sendmail, and any web server. maybe cron. i don't know about the rest of your problems.

to get your CD4 sources back (or any CD source, for that matter) do the following..........
MCC->software management->software media manager. click on each CD source (one at a time) then click remove. when they're all removed, click the "add" button. click on "removable device". insert CD4 & mount if necessary, in the "name" box name it whatever you like (keeping it simple helps, IE: mdk cd1, mdk cd2, etc.). in the "path" box put /mnt/(name of cdrom that the cd is mounted in), IE: /mnt/cdrom, /mnt/cdrom1, /mnt/dvdrom, etc. leave the "relative path to synthesis/hdlist" box blank. click "ok". when it's done, remove the CD (umount first if necessary) & repeat the above procedure for each additional CD source if you have others. click "ok" when done. for nvidia installation, see my post #2 in This Thread. as for your net speed issues, that could be caused by several things.......... heavy network traffic, too many internet connections at once, a slow site, a bad connection, etc. it's tough to troubleshoot something like that. i'd say try a few different update mirrors until you find one with decent speed. the speed of various ftp mirror sites can vary greatly. if you want to eliminate some running services that you probably don't need, go to Mandrake Control Center->system->services. use the info buttons to see if you think you need something. chances are, you won't need most of them. i have mine whittled down to 17 running & i prolly could eliminated a couple more if it weren't for the convenience of it. (like numlock, sensors, harddrake, raw devices). just make sure you don't shut off some services that are absolutley needed for your system to run. the following are needed........... alsa (if you're using the alsa sound system) cups (if you want to print) dm (for your graphical display) iptables & shorewall (if you're running a firewall) keytable (for keyboard) kheader (kde kernel header regeneration) network (for internet) random (for security) sound (self explanatory ;) ) xfs (X font server) otis |

those aren't services. they're processes. some of them are processes of servers. i see a webserver, and a portmapper you probably don't need.
you can check your services with ksysv, and change them. |
anyway thanx man:)......now i will shift to others problems....Linux is very tough 4 a newbie in some ways....i have just installed a new hard disk....i mounted it through MCC.....but, i cannot access it in mnt folder...folder is having lock....Folder properties is showing only root can see the content.....How i can change the permission for read n write???
Thanx in advance:) //The_neo |
