Tweaking questions.

I have 2 systems running mandrake 10 and 1 running windows xp, my sound has been horrible in mandrake (onboard nForce2 ultra 400 on one, K8T800 on the other, onboard as well, both asus) I want to tweak my sound to adjust the EQ. I have have the sound mixer on my toolbar, only so I can turn the master/PCM down to cut off all of the hissing. The sound mixer does nothing else to my advantage. I'm not a coder, i've heard of people tweaking video and sound for linux, whileas windows has point-click install drivers to configure the O/S to use the full features of the hardware, it seems to my knowledge people in linux have to do it themselves.

Can anybody point me to a good refference or give me any help? i've googled it to find basics regarding manual hardware configurations, nothing explicit or to the point, nor exactly what i'm looking to do either.

There are very few hardware manufactures that write and release source code to support linux hardware, so drivers are most commonly made by reverse-engineering and api sniffing on a windows machine, to find out what is sent to the device, and what happens when that combination is sent. Check your hardware on the compatibility list as someone may have been having problems like bad sound with the same hardware, and may have been able to fix it.
