TV card

Does anyone have any past experience in using a TV tuner (capture) card?
What is involved in setting one up, how good are the linux drivers and can you capture and encode video?

P.S what kinds work and what kinds don't + where can I buy one that works

Thanks

read this thread

the above will probably give you a stepping stone on what type of card to decide on ...
as of how good they perform, i cannot answer ....
my card has minimal support (i think they only have it developed to the point where you can only view in black/white image)
so with that said, i never attempted it with my card ....

p.s. just curious on why this was posted in the Mandrake fourm ?

1. It was posted because Mandrake has configuration tools in drakconf
2. It was posted because I would be running Mandrake and I wanted to see what would support it

things like this. i.e. hardware support are never distro related. it's all down to the kernel you are running etc... there is no way (excluding actively bad developing) that a bit of hardware can work on redhat and not mandrake, especially somethign as simple as a tv card.

you have provided no information about which card you wish to use though. please write more detailed posts in future.

most cards are bt878 based, which is suported fine, newer chips like cx88 and sasomethingorother are less supported, all are writting at http://bytesex.org

A TV card is comprised of two components that need to be supported by the driver. The first is the framegrabber, which is what the brooktree (now conexant) 878 chip is, and the second component is the tuner. Bttv does NOT support all the tuners found in 878 based cards (most of them, but not all.) It's true that if it works with one distro it'll work with another. Mandrake just provides a GUI utility that'll configure everything automagically, which can save you many hours of googling.
