I will try compiling the Qt libraries from source - will I have to uninstall the libs that are already there? I looked at doing that via RPM last night (which was how I installed them) and it said that because of dependencies it needed to uninstall about another 100+ things... :-(

I knew Linux wasn't going to be easy but it didn't realise it was going to be this hard...

When you install from sorce it should install in /usr/local/?/? You should beable to have both on your system without problems. Once you have it compiled and installed you will need to use the --with-qt-includes=/usr/local/?/? to compile against them. You may also need to change the QTDIR and what not to the new location.

There is a way if it works to have all the KDE programs link to the new libraries so you can remove the RPMs but I am not sure the easiest way to do that.

I was still hoping that someone else with a little more knowledge would pipe up and help us out.

P.S. Linux isn't always this hard. You just got lucky enough to be one of the few that have rather abnormal problems. You also got lucky enough to have a moderate linux user help you. I am not an expert my any definition!
