trouble with installing mandrake 10

hi all. I'm getting a lot of probs installing mandrake on my computer. here's my config:

AMD Athlon Xp 2800+, ABIT NF7 mobo, 512 mb DDR 333, 2 x Maxtor 80 GB(IDE), MSI Nvidia FX 5600, 256 Mb, CDRW Samsung, CD Sony

I can boot from the cd but my computer freezes when the install starts. i tried installing the minimum linux ( no packages, no KDE or Gnome), just the console and it worked. but it's not what i want. i tried making another copy of my installation CD, same thing: computer freezes. in fact my computer can freeze at any time. is it incompatibility with my hardware or what? please help me!

did you try to re-download the cd, not just to burn it a second time? or check the md5sum? maybe there's something wrong with the iso file

i'v checked the isos, they're all ok. i scanned my two HDS, they're ok too. i burnt a second copy of my Man CD 1, at lower speed (24 x instead of 52x), same thing. I tried installing Mandrake 10 like 20 times, it froze 19 times. i don't know what is the prob.

try using some options before you do the boot installation. What i mean is, i think that you can specify that you wish to turn on/off acpi. My friend had problems with his motherboard (i don't remember which he has) so he specified the options: "force no apic" and "force no local apic" (i.e. no lapic). I'm not sure where that is when you boot from the cd, but i can guess that it is the first screen that you see. <Enter> or F1 right when you boot it up.

Hope this helps

Yeah! i installed linux successfully with the no apic thing, but when i try to install more packages like Gnome or kde and other packages it tells me to insert CD 4, wich i don't have and can't find too, i looked for it on multiple FTPs in mandrakelinux.com but it doesn t seem to exist. and while trying to install gnome or kde i have "kinput ....pkg" or somethin like that missing. so what's goin on?

cd4 is for members only...

http://games.gci.net/pub/Linux/Mandr...10.0-Official/
has a cd4, but i don't think that it is the official cd, as it doesn't have the GPL on it, or the base folder.

if you're looking for some packages that are on cd4, try looking here: ftp://ftp.free.fr/pub/Distributions_...ake/10.0/i586/

it has bittorrent, SNES emulators, etc. Nice stuff.

btw, KDE and GNOME should be located on the first three cds, as I have KDE installed, and i don't have the fourth cd

if you're wanting the enterprise edition of redhat (but don't mind the "redhat" logo or any of its trademarks missing) download White Box Enterprise Linux http://www.whiteboxlinux.org :-D
