Trouble installing alsa in Mandrake 10.0 Community.

I've had no sound in Mandrake 10.0 Community since I installed it. So I recently tried intalling alsa to see if that would solve my problem. When I do so it tells me:

checking for kernel version... The file /usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h does not exist.
Please, install the package with full kernel sources for your distribution
or use --with-kernel=dir option to specify another directory with kernel
sources (default is /usr/src/linux).

I don't know what this "package with full kernel sources" is. Can someone tell me?

On a related note, when I run sndconfig I can get a sample out of my Soundblaster AWE64 but then the terminal stops doing anything for me and it just repeats these two lines over and over every few minutes:

210.65.231.206 sent an invalid ICMP type 3, code 3 error to a broadcast: 198.166.31.255 on eth0
198.166.16.1 sent an invalid ICMP type 3, code 3 error to a broadcast: 198.166.31.255 on eth0

Any insight into that would be appreciated as well.

Thanks.

I think the first problem is just an error message the system spits out when it can't find the kernel source code. To add in the source code, just go to a console as root and type:

urpmi kernel-source

It should ask you to insert CD3, I believe, and it'll then copy over the kernel source code. I think that's what that error message is for, but I apologize if I'm wrong (I'm still a Linux newbie myself).

As for the second problem, I'm afraid I have no clue. Sorry.

Thumbs up Download it from the Mandrake Website

Hi,
Most of the core programs require the kernel-source files to be installed. Suprisingle Mandrake has not been providing this with the download ISO images. Sometimes users have reported to have found the file in the CD3. It is called kernel-source-2.someversion

If you need the file you can download it by clicking this link

http://www.sunsite.org.uk/sites/carr...-7mdk.i586.rpm

If you are not able to download from this link then you can go into any other sitre listed under the download sites and look for the path 10.0/i586/Mandrake/RPMS where you will find the kernel source 2.4 and 2.6 Since you are using the MDK 10.0 I will advise you to download and install 2.6 which comes with MDK 10.0

Now log into console as root and excute this file with rpm and then try installing alsa.

bye,
Dino.
