Trouble Installing 10.1 Community

Hi,

I successfully booted to CD and progressed through a Mandrake 10.1 Community install with no errors or problematic signs. However, when I reboot, I just get the classic "INSERT SYSTEM DISK" error. I went into recovery mode and reinstalled Lilo, but that didn't help.

I installed it over top of a pre-existing Win2k install. Do you think it would be wise to remove all partitions and then reinstall? I remember reading a few things about BIOS settings. I'm not sure of the version right now, but I know that it is an AwardBIOS. The machine is a 1.2 Duron, 256mb PC2100, 40gig HDD.

Any ideas? Was looking forward to testing it out... by the time I get an answer, I'll probably be able to install 10.1 Official.

The Linux Kernel (located in the /boot directory) must be installed to a PRIMARY partition and the boot loader to the MBR, not the partition itself as people often do as this is given as a choice.

If you want to start over and blow everything away set things up so that you have something like this.

/boot for Linux in the first PRIMARY partition
SWAP space for Linux
WindowsXP or Win2kX
/ Linux root, can be any partition type you choose.

You can flip the SWAP and Windows order if you want as well depending upon how your disk is laid out and how much space you want to allocate.

Hi,

I don't need to dual boot this, so I just selected 'install over Windows' in Mandrake. Sorry I was not as clear in the first post. I haven't examined the partition structure that it made, so there could have been some errors.
