Ok, so I just installed Mandriva 2006 and am trying to play a movie using Totem. I get the error that it can't find the DVD URI Handler. I searched the forums and only found responses dealing with using Yum to install. Is there a file I need to download from a repository, or is it something simple in a config file? Any help is appreciated.
You probably need to install libdvdcss which allows dvd decoding (the legality of which is questionable, hence not being installed). To get it, you will need to add the plf repositories to your urpmi installation. To do that, goto easyurpmi.org, and follow the detailed simple instructions (it will also update your update repository and add some others). After that process is finished, install by typing (as root):
urpmi libdvdcss
It may have some dependancies that it will install, but it's fairly simple, and very quick with DSL or better internet connection. Shouldn't be bad for dialup either, as they are not that big.
Ok, the first part went fine, but when I typed that command as root it only told me that the urpmi database was locked. Upon entering that command a second time, I got a message that there is no package named libdvdcss. In between typing of commands, I checked the update column on the contrib repositorys on the media manager.
Make sure you get both plf repositories added to your urpmi database, and make sure that all updating is completed before trying to run urpmi or any gui package manager first. The package is in the plf repository (I just updated mine today from there, with the same command I typed earlier).
Oops. I noticed that I gave you a bad url earlier. to update urpmi, goto here. Following the step by step process there, I get the following commands to update all my repositories:
You should have something similar. Just highlight with the mouse, then middle click in a terminal window (su root first). This will update all your urpmi tables. Then you can type "urpmi libdvdcss" to install it.
I found the correct URL by googling, so that didn't throw me off. Of the commands that you posted I tried all of them and 3 worked, the others failed for various reasons. I then did the urpmi libdvdcss command, and it seemed to install. Upon loading Totem and trying to play disc, it now fails and tells me it cannot read title information for the DVD.
All that checked out fine, and now Totem crashes whenever I attempt to play a DVD, no error messages or anything. I ended up trying it in Kaffeine (which was giving me similair errors before your help) and it worked fine. So for now I guess I will be using Kaffeine as my default DVD player. Thanks for your help.
