Please can you be more detailed on hardware differences between the two PCs, the working an yours? Maybe lilo behaviour is due to bad assumptions
on which disk to begin booting made on the last installation phase. I suggest to compare the lilo.conf of both systems, that would advisable we could see.
Regards
Alberto

i'm using grub which is different to lilo in only a few ways.

My /boot/grub/menu.lst is as follows

color white/blue black/light-gray
default 0
timeout 8
gfxmenu (hd0,1)/boot/message

###

title SuSE Linux 9.1 Professional
kernel (hd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda2 vga=0x31a splash=silent desktop resume=/dev/hda5 showopts
initrd (hd0,1)/boot/initrd

###

title Failsafe
kernel (hd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda2 showopts ide=nodma apm=off acpi=off vga=normal noresume nosmp noapic maxcpus=0 3
initrd (hd0,1)/boot/initrd

My /etc/grub.conf is

root (hd0,1)
install --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 /boot/grub/stage1 d (hd0) /boot/grub/stage2 0x8000 (hd0,1)/boot/grub/menu.lst
quit

I take it Mandrake uses lilo exclusively? Is it possible to reinstall Mandrake on your system, and perhaps use a new grub bootloader. I'll have a look on another machine to see if anything else turns up

Also, what type of drive is it? Linux has certain issues with SATA hard disks, for instance. They're supported in SuSE 9.3 and FC3, but I'm unsure whether Mandrake/Mandriva support them out of the box.
