The "patch" command cannot be found

I'm trying to update my kernel (2.2.15) to a later version. Original software in Mandrake 7.0. I'm new at linux so I'm starting with V2.2.16. I uncompress the update which created the "linux" directory. Now I'm trying to apply the 2.2.16 patch, but the system is reporting that it cannot find the "patch" command. I'm using this command string:
cd linux
gzip -dc /mnt/cdrom/v2.2/patch-2.2.16.gz | patch -p1 # [ENTER]

the system reports command not found.

Can someone please point out my mistake(s) and get going down the right path?

Have you tried using the 'find', 'locate'/'slocate' or 'whereis' commands to locate the patch app?

If so, what was the output?

The "patch" command cannot be found

I will try that today. Seems kinda of weird that this command cannot be found. If I can't locate the app, I'll just reload linux and try again.
