TCP/IP problems on Corporate LAN
 

I am tired of Windows and its problems and decided to venture into Linux, obtained the Mandriva distro, run KDE 3.5.4 and tried to hook up to the corporate LAN.
Sypmtoms:
I set up the station to use the dhclient and it does obtain an IP from the corporate LAN. However that's all that happens. I cannot ping any other host on the LAN, cannot get onto the Internet or the mail server. It seems that I'm not transmitting at all, as if something within Linux itself is blocking the traffic.
Now when I boot to Windows, it too doesn't connect to the LAN!

Actions so far:
I have set the security levels to the lowest possible still to no avail.

I would appreciate some insight into the situation...

Hi,

as you already mentioned, in windows you have the same problems. Have you looked at your network cable? Maybe it's not correctly connected to your nic.
You said you get an IP from your corporate LAN but nothing more. Are you really sure it's fromn your LAN not a local one?
Your firewall should not have anything to do with that, as this is normal traffic which will not be filtered out. My first thought was about a restriction from your corporate LAN, but I think these filters will work on MAC-Adresses, which does not change during a new installation.
What does "ifconfig" shows?

thanks for taking time to check out my problem and attempt to respond.
Interestingly, prior to installing Linux, XP worked fine on the LAN and I've not touched the cable at all. I would also doubt that it's LAN restrictions... <because I'm the LAN administrator...:-)>
With the PC able to register with the LAN DHCP server, local DNS and obtain an address within the local DHCP range, I'm inclined to think that the cable is cool and that DHCP requests are not being filtered.
I decided to take out the IPTables service and still nothing has changed. I'm inclined to re-do the installation but I'm not sure how to get it off the system to the point it was at before I started so that I can ensure that the installation choices I make are more sensible.

run /sbin/ifconfig

Post the output here (yeah, I know that is difficult without a working network). Examine your dhcp server logs (or possibly it's syslog), and confirm that the requests ar being received and answered. Use arp on the dhcp server, and confirm that it sees (or not) your new setup's IP.

What happens if you manually assign IP, gateway, DNS, netmask, etc.?
