Unhappy system locking up due to nvidia drivers?

Hey all,

Last night I "successfully" installed the latest nvidia IA32 driver, which supports my card. By successfully I mean it installed correctly, and the nvidia splash screen comes on at startup. However, after about 5 minutes of normal use (searching the web, e-mail) my computer will lock up.

As I am new to Linux I am not sure how to troubleshoot this type of error.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

in my xorg.conf file, I added the line
Code:
Option "NvAGP" "3"
right after
Code:
Driver "nvidia"
I am up and running now, and will let everyone know if this fixed the problem.

YAY! System stopped locking up, so for anyone having the same problems I did, meaning the system would lock up at random when using the nvidia drivers, do the fix I posted in the previous post.

I spoke too soon. System is locking up again. What are some basic troubleshooting methods I can use to figure out the problem?

Thanks,

chris

disable agp

are u using via chipset...AMD combo i your MOBO..
it has issues in with NVIDIA drivers..
you should try to disable AGP
Option "NvAGP" "0"
it would help...

if you really want yo use your agp then
try..to modify the source of NVIDIA drivers..
hint: read the README file

I have the same problem, mdk 10.1 freezes at random after 5 to 15 minuts.

Me too, I believed first that the problem was due to the Nvidia driver. I went back to the "nv" driver (which induces other problems). The computer worked properly during 30 mn but unfortunately freezed again, and after reboot it freezed again every 5 minutes. Conclusion, in my case the problem doesn'tcome from the Nvidia driver.

I also tried to play with the NvAGP option (note that you (bbioman85) couldn't fixe the problem with option 3 as it is the default option). With Nvidia driver I tried also option 0 (which disable AGP) but it didn't fixed the problem.

Other idea: all the times the computer freezed, I was using the wheel of my mouse.... except the last time, the computer freezed during a long installation during which I didn't touch the mouse.

so, no idea............
