switching consoles in Mandrake 9.1

whenever i switch consoles out of X (ie if I press Ctrl+Alt+F1), I can't switch back to Ctrl-Alt-F7. If I try, I just get a black screen. I can still hear all my sounds and I know X is still running because I get an error to that effect if I try 'startx'

I have a GeForce 4 Ti 4200 video card and I am using NVIDIA's drivers (4496).

on redhat, i use Alt-f7 not Ctl-Alt-f7 to switch back. Ctl-xxx is for inside X and Alt-xx is when not in graphical mode (alt-f1,alt-f2, ... switch between consoles)

but if i'm in the text console and i press Alt-F7, it should bring me back to X, right?
Instead, I just get a black screen
