Many do work in linux but require a module. Check this link out and see what you can find on it. http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html
Searching google for the webcam name and the word linux will show help links ususally if it works or not.

I did have a Labtec webcam pro installed under Mandriva2006 supported by spca5xx kernel module.

The problem I found was that it was fine in daylight, but in the evenings/low light I became a silhouette. The camera performed better under windows. You might want to see if you can find any details of ones that are good in low light in linux.

I have 3 Logitech QuickCam Communicate STX cams (USB 2.0) (Driver: spca5xx) and 1 D-Link DCS-900 ip cam (Model B, Driver version 3.00)

There is a problem with kernel 2.6.17-8 with usb webcams that I am trying to get resolved, but they worked fine under Mandriva 2006 and 2007 and kernels <= 2.6.17.6

kernel-2.6.17.10 has been released. Perhaps they resolved your issue? I have not checked, but this is FYI .

All updated software including updated kernels can be found in the updates media source. I use proxad.net here, and you can get the updated Mandriva 2007.0 kernel (kernel-2.6.17.10mdv-1-1mdv2007.0.i586) here.

Thanks, but I generally wait until rpms are available via urpmi so that I don't get dependency issues.
