submitted kde bug, anybody else have this

when i enable translucency from kcontrol i get the following on login:

composite extension not found
you must use xorg greater than or equal to 6.8 for translucency and shadows to work.
additionally, you need to add a new section to your xconfig file:

section: "extensions"
option: "composite" "enable"
endsection

not sure i got the syntax right above but i did get it right when i applied it, did
a search to check myself.

if i apply the above section to xconfig the system bogs down markedly and i get odd
artifacts and behaviour from the menus. things won't turn off when i try to. for
example, i turned off all transparency and animation and fades for the menus because
of the system bogging down. the menus continued to fade as do windows when activated
or closed.

the kmenu displays artifacts in that i can see other items, items not active or
selected, through the active menu. for example, my main kmenu has 'office' above
'internet.' if i hover over 'office', i see my openoffice submenus. if i hover over
'internet,' i see browsers and the like. however, the internet submenu also displays,
faintly, the choices for 'office,' at least those that would naturally overlap the
'internet' menu if they could both be active at the same time.

further, the drop shadows are buggy. some are ok, but some appear as sharp duplicates
of the foreground item rather than as a soft dark shadow.

because of all of this, i turned off all such effects. the system, however, did not
recognize the changes and continued to be slow and to exhibit these behaviours.

finally, i commented out the recently added section in xconfig. the sluggishness,
artifacts and bugs disappeared. what i was left with was a smoothely running kde
desktop that gives me an error message on login.

conclusion:
i seem to have a choice between running the config as prompted, with the xconfig mods,
leaving me unable to use some of kde's nicer features, or i can omit the mods and
face annoying error messages which seem completely irrelevant. adding the mods does
get rid of the error message but at the cost of the systems usability.

I had the same problem with Slack 10.2 using KDE 3.4.2..........So I disabled all the KDE eye-candy garbage..........

for now i'm putting up with the error message and letting the composite manager
go ahead and be disabled (if it really is). everything seems to work fine that way.
just annoying to have to look at the message knowing everything will be working
fine.
