Strange Problem: Install freezes on format of HDB7 or copying files to HDB7
Im not the biggest fan of Mandrake, but I liked what 10 had to offer, even if it ran slow on my old comp...
Anyways, I have two hard drives in my comp, an 80 gig and a 40gig. I use the 80 as my Win XP pro drive(work requires a Windows based OS, mainly for work on clients machines), and the 40gig as my Linux drive. I started to format my drives with the typical layout I always have(with slackware), formatted fine until it hit the 3rd logical partion(hdb7) . It totally freezes, and infact causes mass errors on teh drive in which I have to fdisk it and start over to even access it.
I tried this 3 or 4 times, I forget how many. Each time I waited an hour + to make sure it was frozen. Then I decided to install Slackware 9.1, and the partitions all worked perfectly. Havnt tried any other distro's but I think the result will be the same. Only MDK10 seems to have a problem with formatting/copying files to the 3rd logical partition on drive b.
Heres my specs:
AMD Athlon Xp 2100+
1024MB DDR400
Geforce FX5600XT
80Gbyte Seagate
40Gbyte Western Digital
nVidia nForce 2 Ultra 400 Chipset(Shuttle XPC mobo)
Heres some theories I came up with...
Lack of a fully working IDE driver for the nForce chipset in MDK10
Corrupt install image(works on other computers though..)
Bad harddrive(still a maybe, just 'cause it works with other distros+ windows disck check+ pm 8.0 disk check doesnt mean its good)
