Strange noise heard when running mandriva.

Hi all,
I've installed Mandriva 2008.1 in my Dell Vostro 1400 laptop along with Vista.

My experience with Mandriva has generally been good so for, though I have not been able to add repos to it and do installs using urpmi.

My current query is that I hear strange noise when running Mandriva, which I have never heard before while running either Windows or other distros. Its something like a gas leak. I have observed that it starts with the starting of 'udev'. What it could be. The hardware is standard Vostro-1400 hardware-I don't know the details. Has anybody experienced the same.

I'm suspicious of this noise as I think its not normal. The performance of the system has not been affected till now though. Kindly help.

Gas leak?? So there's a hissing sound, which is audible after the starting of udev. Could it be hardware related? Your hard drive or a disc in the cd/dvd drive spinning? You can add repos using the either of the links in my sig.

Hi Nexus,
Thanks for the links.
As for the hissing sound problem, it was because I had set the volume too lound on one of the Input MUX. I don't know the details of these but was suggested to check for volume levels using KMix. I tried lowering one by one and found that in the KMix window, in the Input section the first MUX was high. When I lowered it the hissing sound stopped.

The problem is solved. Hope both your links and my solution may help others.

Thanks again.
