still problem with start-up disc
 

I wanted to make a start-up floppy disc so i can boot it from there also. but i can't find that option anywere. i tried to reinstall and to choose bootloader to be saved on floopy disk(a fat32 disc) but there is a fatal error 'The system will be destroyed'. so it didn't worked that way.
does someone still knows how to go about and make a start-up floppy/cd disc
on mandrake 10.1 official?

i have also another problem. The menus i Configure Your Desktop/Computer are so small and i cannot fix it with lower resolution. It happens nothing. then i went about and make the fonts get bigger and my start menu get bigger but still mandrake control center is not to be read unless i stick my head into the screen.
is someone familiar with this problem?

Hi there, I don't see a reason why you would need such a floppy disk? as the Manddriva/Mandrake first CD is bootable, I`ve used the CD to bootup the system, it also has recovery tools.

If you post a screenshot of your desktop so we could see the menus, I`m sure a solution could be offered, almost everything is customisable.

Are you sure? i know that when i install red hat 9.0 it asks for option to make a boot
floppy disk, so i can start the sytem from there if something goes wrong on the
hard disk.
but if i can boot from CD1 how does it know where i installed mandrake, i mean on which partition?
shouldn't boot loader knows on which partition to start the system? CD1 doesn't have that knowledge..or what?
i mean a need this back-up solution if something goes wrong on partition where the mandrake is
installed. hey, i'm looking forward to hear your opinion on the subject.

what about the second problem, that of small letters in Control Panel. do you know anything
about that?

Have you tried adjusting the size of your fonts. You can do it from the fonts option available via kde menu.

system - configuration - kde - lookNfeel - fonts

You probably need to make the system font larger.

I adjusted the fonts in kde myself yesterday and set it to 14. and it was improvment on my desktop and other programs. but only when i open mandrake control center is still as i have 1600 X 14000 resolution. it isn't to be read..

regarding start-up disk or boot disc. it's not boot disk for installing the system but the boot disk to boot already existing system. i tried to run CD1 but the only option is to reinstall or recover the system but no option on boot floopy disc..

The screensize
 

should be relatively easy to resolve... on your 'start' menu, go under system... Configuration... Hardware... Screen Resize & Rotate. This will start a small rectangular icon on the lower right of your screen that you will want to click...

this will bring up a list of screen sizes that should be more to your liking


As for the boot disk, being someone who is now using a system that does NOT have a floppy drive capability, I am now acutely aware of what a luxury this can be. I know that towards the end of the installation of 10.1, there is an option of preparing a boot disk. I do not know of where this utility is in Mandrake 10.1 (theoretically you should be able to start this yourself with your currently installed system, however I do not have the particular command line name of that utility at hand)

If I remember right, the option to do this was one of the very LAST screens of the install, so you might have to go through that all again just to make your boot disk if no one knows the name of the utility. You could start your install disk, and pick 'Update to 10.1' instead of 'install'... then it should go through your disks without doing anything, then make sure you pick the same options when those come up and make your boot disk when you get through that. A bit of a hassle, but I know from experience that it *does* work if worse comes to worst

Yippi, it works now with fonts. You give me just an idea, i went to control center and adjusted resolution to 1240x740 in stead of 800x600 and used 24 bit colors in stead of 16. and now it's clear picture and as should be. when i run 'Screen resize and rotate' i got only 2 options: 600x640 and 800x600. I cannot run this low resolution because of my flat screen.

regarding boot disk, i need it because i have a bit complicated system with 2 hard disks and third party boot-loader system commander 7.0 so i need it for some special thing. here is the link to manually make it:

because i'm new to linux, i knew it i will get problems. maybe you can assist.
when i run this command 'mount -t ext2 /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy' i got 'permission denied' error seldom i logged into root account with su and my password.
do you know what the f* is going on? why the permission is denied when i'm the root?
