from the vague description, it sounds like something has overwritten, altered, or removed the device section from your XF86Config-4 file. that section contains your video card info which is necessary to start X.

what font package did you install?

regardless, when X fails to start, you should be left at a login prompt. login as normal user, then type su (enter) root password (enter). now type XFdrake (enter). that will run the video card setup module. make sure the proper vid card & drivers are selected, then test the setup before applying the settings. if you pass the test screen, reboot.

post back with results &/or more info.
