starting kde in mdk 10.1 trouble
I've upgraded my 9.2 distribution to 10.1 Community.
After putting my login and passwd choosing KDE it goes to the screen where it shows what it's actually loading.
During "Statring services" it stops loading.
I can strike Alt+Ctrl+Backspace to get text mode and I can login as root, but not the user I was trying.
Actually I found a little walkaround - first I start in IceWM, then logout and start KDE. Then it loads normally.
Apart of that this upgrade makes me more trouble than benefit. I supose I will have to install Mdk10.1 from a scratch, no upgrades.
It forgot my internet settings, and I have to configure network card each time I start OS. Sound stopped working. Apache and php stopped working. I can't start some apps, like kadu. Just troubles and troubles, and important work needs to be done.
Athlon 2500 MHz proccessor, 512MB RAM, 80GB HDD WD, Abit NF 7 mainboard, DVD 16x MSI, CR-RW 16x TEAC, MAG 786FD monitor

The sound thing happened for me where it would not work, but I fixed it. Go into your mandrake control center and go into hardware. Check out the sound card drivers and make sure it matches yours. I have an Audigy and for some reason, it put some weird drivers on. I manually switched it. Then, I went into the Boot Services and checked ASLA. By default, it was checked off. Then, I rebooted. Make sure you reboot because I thought changes would take effect on the spot, but they don't. YOu have to reboot. Also make sure your volume isn't muted.
As for my internet connection, it also fails to find eth0. When I load up, however, I just click on the connection, type in my root password, and then I'm connected. I have to do this everytime I boot into Mandrake.
So far, from playing with Mandrake 10.1, I discovered that KDE is not packaged correctly into it. Try using GNOME, as that is what I did. Things work better now

Supposedly a lot of things that were wrong in Mdk 10.1 Community have now been fixed in Mdk 10.1 Official.
I gave up on Community because all sorts of things were going wrong; spent a whole day getting back to 9.2 and all my programs reinstalled, etc.
Now I have the Official CD's on order and when I feel brave/foolish enough I'll try again.
Anyway, you might want to try the Official release in case KDE works OK in it....

Ooh...
Now I wonder if I even want to try 10.1.
I wish there were some way to go back to the previous installation (the one that WORKED) without having to do tons of stuff over again.
I tried restoring my system from a complete backup, but it resulted in no kernel being found! The result was that I spent hours and hours getting things back to normal after the 10.1 Community fiasco.

For me, Mandrake 9.1 was the perfect system. I tried going to 9.2 but it didn't work for me so I reinstalled 9.1
I guess in your case, just backup everything and cross your fingers that 10.1 will work for you.

I have a spare hard drive (12Gb) I'm not currently using. Maybe I can install 10.1 on it, temporarily set it in the BIOS to boot from, and experiment with 10.1 without in any way touching my good 9.2 installation.
Sorry 9.2 didn't work for you. I found it better than 9.1 but don't recall now in just what way, except that the antialiasing seemed better to my eyes. I know there were a couple of other improvements that pleased me, too.
I think so much depends on individual hardware differences--more than we usually are aware of, unless we're really technical experts, which I will never be.
