start up problem, can't launch startx/gui
I installed mandrake 10.1 and when I boot up, I enter my password and type: startx, but the following errors come up:
-vga: no matching device section - vga(0): driver can't support depth 24 -screen found, but none have a suitable configuration. fatal server error no screens found I tried xorgconfig to manually configure, but the same thing happens. |
sounds like you didn't configure your video card properly. at the prompt, instead of trying to startx, su to root (type su (enter) password (enter), then type........ XFdrake (enter). that will open the video configuration module. check that you're using the proper drivers for your card, screen res, etc. use the test feature & accept changes when it passes.
you didn't mention this.......... what video card are you using? otis |
Thanks,
This is a second computer I have, it has a pci 32mb ATI Radeon. It also has onboard video, which I disabled to use the card. I did try switching to the onboard to see if that would work, but no dice. The monitor is an 17in Optiquest z70, which wasn't listed in the list of monitors during the install. Would that mean it is not compatible? I also tried the xorgconfig command after logging into root, but I still got the same error message. |
Log in as root and FIRST type
service dm stop If you don't do this Linux may be trying to restart the errant drivers all the time. Then at the prompt type XFdrake And keep trying different combinations until you finally see a rainbow screen. If you get no video or a blank screen, just wait 12 seconds and the text display will return. Save and exit, then either startx or "service dm start". |
