Sound system

Hi, I am running Mandriva 2010.1. What a beautiful op-system! I have a sound problem as it seems to have corrupted. At boot up it plays the Mandriva theme but it is crackly, distorted and somewhat muted. If I want to watch a short video there is no sound at all. On shutdown the theme plays but again it is corrupted. How can I repair this without doing a full re-install. I would also like to know how this happened if at all possible.

Try command: --$ alsamixer

using Tab and Arrow keys set device preferences, balance, volume levels. Press Ctl+C to exit.

Thanks for your help. I have done this and found the system was set on default. I changed it to the proper sound device, Nvidia Realtek 888, which is the onboard chip. The volume increased but the sound was still corrupted. It then re-set itself to "default".
