Hmm. No artsd process so arts is not running. Try SpIToS suggestion and if that doesn't work, we'll try recompiling ALSA.

Got other stuff we could try Nis? My sound really sucks and only like 1 app out of 10 has sound... Alsa is configured and I use the alsa driver snd-ens1371 for my soundcard. Some arts apps works but most of oss and alsa apss don't seem to work... I tried to change stuff in harddrake and my kde sound system but nothing seemed to help...

Edit: It seems that the oss driver isn't used by anything... Anyway I could delete my sound card maybe or do something so it detects it again cause now this is really weird...

I wish I could get any sound. Even white noise would be great now. I swear, Linux has me in a bind. The only distro that I've found that works with all of my hardware is Knoppix, but I would rather use a distribution designed to be installed on a hard drive.

I'll try that chmod thing when I get home from work here in about an hour. I'll post results later this evening!

Ok, the chmod 777 /dev/dsp -- nothing happened, still no sound. Any suggestions?

I appears either ALSA is not completely installed or something went wrong during the install. My last suggestion is to try compiling your own ALSA stuff (don't worry, it's easy).
Go to the list of supported cards and find yours. Hopefully it will be supported. If so go to that page and follow the instructions to the letter. They're laid out sequentialy so everything is easy to follow. Try that and hopefully things will work. If not, you might have to try the OSS (deprecated sound system).

Did you try killing the artsd process? From your description it sounds like arts is hogging /dev/dsp

I tried to find the drivers for my card, but nothing seems to work. I went and bought a reasonably priced PCI Sound Blaster 128 yesterday, and I'm going to install it this evening. Hopefully this will correct it. If it doesn't, I'm going to to try a reinstall or maybe a different distro.

Hi, looks like you have same onboard chip as i have.

Module is snd-via8xx ( if ALSA is for you )... get mine working after some work, and now is fine.

What is the output of : dmesg and lsmod ??
